Brushing and Flossing

Our team focuses on a holistic approach to our patients' dental health. While the work we do in our Sunbury, OH office is critical to a healthy smile, it is equally important to take care of your teeth outside the office. When it comes to matters of home oral hygiene, brushing and flossing are the two cornerstones you need to focus on. As such, here are Sunbury Dental’s recommended best practices for your brushing and flossing routine.

Brushing

brush.pngSqueeze a small strip of fluoride toothpaste onto a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brush your teeth by moving the brush in small circular motions across every part of your teeth, knocking away food particles and removing plaque. Once you've brushed your teeth and gums, brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth before rinsing your mouth out with water. If you're doing it right, it should take at least two minutes for you to completely brush your teeth. 

When wearing braces, or undergoing any other form of orthodontics, we recommend that patients brush their teeth at least four times daily to avoid plaque build up and tooth decay. Optimal times for brushing are:

  • After breakfast
  • Right after school or after lunch
  • After dinner
  • Before bed

When brushing, be careful to avoid swallowing toothpaste. Remember to rinse your mouth with water thoroughly once you're done. And be mindful of replacing your toothbrush as soon as the bristles start to soften or wear down—at least every three months, but usually more frequently when you’re wearing braces.

Flossing

brush.pngFlossing is just as critical to your dental health as brushing. For even the most advanced toothbrushes cannot effectively clean between the teeth. Ergo, daily flossing is critical. In fact, without flossing you'd leave 30% of your tooth surfaces unprotected and exposed to problematic decay. 

To floss your teeth, pull some floss out of the container and wrap it around your two middle fingers. Use your fingers to gently move the floss through the gaps between your teeth, guiding it up and down to dislodge food particles and scrape away plaque. Once you've finished with a pair of teeth, unwrap the floss and then wrap it around your fingers again so you're using a new section. Once you've finished you should have used every part of the floss strip from beginning to end. 

At first it's normal to see a little bleeding when you floss. This should go away after the first few times. If it doesn't, call our Sunbury, OH office to let us know and we'll schedule an appointment to better examine your situation.
