Common Dental Problems:

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is one of the most common dental problems among patients of all ages. Foods and snacks rich in carbohydrates and sugar leave deposits on your teeth that bond with the bacteria in your mouth to form plaque. When plaque is not removed, it results in tooth decay as it eats away at tooth enamel. While tooth decay is very common, it is preventable. By limiting the amount of foods you consume which contain high amounts of sugar and carbohydrates, you can cut your risk for developing tooth decay.

Sensitive Teeth

Teeth naturally expand and contract in reaction to temperature changes. Hot and cold foods and drinks can cause discomfort or irritation to people with sensitive teeth. Over time, the tooth enamel can wear down, the gums can recede or teeth can develop tiny cracks to expose the interior of the tooth and irritating nerve endings. Even breathing cold air can cause pain in people with extremely sensitive teeth.

Periodontal Disease

The American Dental Association states that 75 percent of Americans over the age of 35 have some form of periodontal disease. Recent literature links periodontal disease to heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease. Periodontal disease or gum disease as it is also called, can cause inflammation of the gums, tooth loss and bone damage. Signs of periodontal disease include consistently bad breath or a foul taste in the mouth. Early stage periodontal disease is called gingivitis. People with gingivitis often have red, swollen gums that bleed easily. As periodontal disease progresses, it leads to periodontitis which can lead to tooth loss or teeth so badly damaged they must be extracted. The good news is that periodontal disease is highly preventable and can usually be avoided by proper brushing and flossing.

Bad Breath (Halitosis)

Bad breath is often caused by the build up of food particles, bacteria and plaque. While some foods like garlic or anchovies can cause temporary bad breath, consistent bad breath can indicate that gum disease or another type of dental problem is present.

Canker Sores

Canker sores or aphthous ulcers are small, recurring sores on the inside of the mouth. They have a white or gray base surrounded by a red border. Canker sores can linger for a week or two and can be reduced by using antimicrobial mouthwashes or topical agents.

Orthodontic Problems

A malocclusion or “bad bite” can be biological or acquired. Some of the common causes of a malocclusion include missing teeth, extra teeth, crowded teeth, misaligned jaw, injuries or trauma or bad oral habits such as finger or thumb sucking.
