National Children's Dental Health Month

National Children's Dental Health Month
Posted on 02/01/2016

Here at Sunbury Dental, February is a pretty special month for us. There's the obvious reasons - that Valentine's Day falls in February, that both Lincoln and Washington were born in February, and that February is not only the shortest month of the year, but also the only month that changes length every few years. But for us, the most important thing about February is that it's National Children's Dental Health Month - a wonderful event that supports and spreads awareness for a truly important cause.

Setting the Foundations for a Healthy Smile

In recognition of National Children’s Dental Health Month, we at Sunbury Dental want to remind everyone that being watchful of what our kids consume, can have a lifetime of benefits for our children. This is especially important when your child is undergoing orthodontic treatment!

Here are some tips to help reduce your child’s risk for tooth decay:

  • Sugary foods and drinks should be consumed with meals. Saliva production increases during meals and helps neutralize acid production and rinse food particles from the mouth.
  • Limit between-meal snacks. If kids crave a snack, offer them nutritious foods.
  • Monitor beverage consumption.  Instead of soft drinks all day, children should also choose water and low-fat milk.
  • Help your children develop good brushing and flossing habits.
  • Schedule regular dental check-ups.
